14 Floor Tom Vs 16

If i decided to go 1 up 1 down i d take the 11x14 rack tom and mount it on a snare stand and use a 16 x16 floor tom to accompany it.
14 floor tom vs 16. In the last four years i have been playing a 16 inch floor tom. It works good for many styles of music and in small venues. Floor toms can be mounted. And 14 and 16 floor toms sound really good together but a 14 can only do so much especially if you re into playing heavier music.
From all of the floor toms my favorite sounding one is the 16x14. As a floor tom the depths range from 11 to 14. If you want to size down think about the intervals you want in your kit. I m enjoying my first hanging 16 x 14 floor tom and an 18 x 16 with it.
I have drum sets configured 12 14 20 12 16 22 13 16 20 13 16 22 11 16 18 and my walberg auge set that came from the factory with a 14x22 bass drum 9x13 mounted tom and a 16 deep x 14 across floor tom. I don t care for 16 floor toms. I always have a hard time getting them to sound good. They are a dynamic duo.
Every floor tom of mine is a true floor tom with legs. The 14 floor tom i have no problem with but if i want a bigger sound i step over the 16 and go for the 18 floor tom. I use my 12 and 14 mounted toms in floor tom position and the 16 floor next to it as third floor tom. Apr 12 2020 8 i play a 12 16 tom setup and really value the large tonal separation between the two.
I think every drummer needs both. 14 and 16 inch floor tom. The suspension causes a little spring in the drum but not enough to create any distraction. I prefer a 20 but for a bigger sound i go for a 24.
I played a 14 inch floor tom for many many years. If i had a choice between a 14 diameter drum it would be a 11x14 rack tom rather than a 14 x14 floor tom. To me the design version floor or mounted is not important only the size and position. That is 18 inches 46 cm in diameter and 16 in depth the most common size for a second floor tom used with a 16x16.
Now i realize that sometimes you just have to have a 16 inch tom. Generally a 14 tom is a very easy drum and it produces a great sound regardless of the depth. The sound is what you would expect from a 16 ft and that s what it is. The 16 diameter is almost always a floor tom.
Same with 22 bass drums. Especially for outdoor use. Equal size increments help to get equal intervals between the drums. The most popular floor tom sizes are 14 x 12 13 and 14.
16x18 a rarer size sometimes used for a second floor tom also with a 16x16.
