18 floor tom tuning. I ve been working with a kid who has a really nice custom maple kit teaching him some tuning techniques and letting him develop his own opinion on the sound he prefers. It just sounded like it couldn t decide whether or not it wanted to be a tom or floor tom. I have been using a tunebot when tuning my drums and have had what i consider to be a strange finding. Tuning an 18 floor tom.
This seems a bit high for a floor tom. Was wondering if any of you have some strong opinions on tuning an 18x16 floor tom. A standard five piece drum set for example features one floor tom next to the snare and two rack toms above it. Personally i find that a ringy floor tom sounds just fine if you are planning to play with other people but if you need the ring gone tape muffle rings and moon gels should fix it.
Me showing u how to tune a floor tom. The dealer threw in a pinstripe for free which i also thought would be a good choice. I ve always had trouble tuning them too especially when i had a 14. I just assumed it would be like a 16 but bigger.
Some kits have more and others have less any number of tom toms in any size can be added to any any kit it s just a matter of the player deciding what they need. I hoping to get some feedback from my fellow pdf reference users to see if this is the norm or not for a reference 18x16 floor tom. As stated tom toms are the support drums you add to your kit. I have just added an 18 floor tom to my crush acrylic kit and am having trouble getting it to sound good.
The lowest pitch that my 18x16 floor tom will produce is around 63 hz. If i tune it down low like i usually do with my 16 it sounds really thin and papery like there is no bottom head on the drum.
